Data Privacy and Security - Alhathloul - DarkMatter Group - Litigation over alleged hacking (US)

Loujain Alhathloul, a prominent Saudi women’s rights advocate, claims she was targeted by a UAE cyberespionage program while in the US, leading to her arrest and torture in Saudi Arabia. She alleges that operatives tied to UAE-based firm DarkMatter hacked her iPhone without authorization in violation of the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, accessing private communications with U.S. journalists and activists. Those communications, she said, were later referenced in Saudi charges against her. The operation, she contends, was part of Project Raven, a clandestine effort to surveil perceived Gulf state dissidents.
