Meta’s appeal against EU privacy watchdogs’ ‘consent or pay’ opinion rejected

( May 12, 2025, 11:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms Ireland's challenge at an EU court against an opinion by the EU’s umbrella group of data protection authorities on the “consent or pay” business model has been rejected as inadmissible. The US tech giant had asked the EU’s lower-tier General Court to annul the EDPB’s opinion. Companies using the model offer their users the choice between either accepting data processing and targeted ads, or paying a fee to avoid them. In an order published today, the General Court said the opinion “does not produce binding legal effects vis-à-vis third parties.” The court said Meta's appeal is “dismissed as, in part, inadmissible and, in part, manifestly lacking any foundation in law.”The General Court order follows:...
