Meta gets shot at Canada Supreme Court reversal of Cambridge Analytica loss

By Mike Swift ( June 16, 2025, 23:10 GMT | Comment) -- In a win for Meta Platforms and a setback for the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Canada's Supreme Court will consider whether to reverse an appeals court ruling which found last year that the former Facebook violated Canada's national private-sector privacy law through data-sharing practices that caused the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal in 2018. The Supreme Court has heard cases relating to Canada's private-sector privacy law in the past, but this will be the first time the top court has dealt with core matters around safeguards and consent in a case initiated by the Privacy Commissioner under Section 15 of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, or PIPEDA.Meta Platforms scored a significant win when the Supreme Court of Canada decided to hear its appeal of a lower court's ruling that marked a rare time when the company was found by a judge to have violated a national privacy law over the Cambridge Analytica privacy breach....
