TikTok, Zalo fined by Vietnam competition authority for user data violations

( January 23, 2026, 03:24 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Vietnam Competition Commission imposed administrative fines of 880 million dong ($33,500) on TikTok Pte. Ltd, the Singapore-based company behind the social media platform TikTok, and 810 million dong on VNG Group JSC, the Vietnam-based operator of the country’s most-used messaging app Zalo, for violations of consumer information protection rules. In statements issued on Thursday, the regulator, which also oversees consumer protection, said the violations include failing to provide users with mechanisms to decide the scope of information they consent to share and whether their data could be used for advertising and other commercial purposes. The commission had previously summoned VNG over Zalo’s request that users accept updated service terms that enabled the app to collect personal data. According to the commission, VNG subsequently collaborated with the authority to review and improve its policies.The statements follows (in Vietnamese)....
