EU extends 90 percent winter gas storage rule to 2027 with added flexibility

( July 18, 2025, 15:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU member states have agreed to extend the requirement to have gas reserves at a minimum of 90 percent of storage capacity heading into winter for two years to 2027, but with flexibility to meet the target anytime between Oct. 1 and Dec. 1 rather than the previous hard deadline of Nov. 1. The rules, which aim to reduce gas price fluctuations and ensure security of supply in the wake of the Ukraine war, also includes a new 10 percentage point flexibility in case of difficult conditions in filling the storages, the Council of the EU said. The European Commission may also provide an additional 5 percentage point leeway in the case of persistent unfavorable market conditions. Full press release follows:...
