UN ocean conservation treaty to enter force early next year, EU Commission says

( September 22, 2025, 09:41 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UN global ocean conservation treaty has now reached 60 country ratifications and so will come into force in early 2026, the European Commission has said, as a signatory to the text. The treaty, known as the “Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement,” aims to protect marine ecosystems from climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss in waters beyond national jurisdictions. It will allow countries to establish large-scale marine protected areas on the high seas, while requiring environmental impact assessments for economic activities in international waters.Press release follows....
