Plug-in hybrids emit nearly five times more CO2 than tests suggest, report says

( October 16, 2025, 14:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Plug-in hybrid vehicles, or PHEVs, emit far more CO2 in real-world driving than official tests indicate, according to new analysis by green group Transport & Environment. The report finds that PHEVs registered in 2023 emit almost five times as much CO2 as claimed in laboratory tests, and that in practice they produce only around 19 percent less CO2 than equivalent petrol or diesel cars. The group criticizes automakers for lobbying to classify plug-ins as “clean technologies” under the banner of technology neutrality, despite their limited climate benefits. Report attached....
