China calls EU CBAM discriminatory, vows measures against unfair trade rules

( January 1, 2026, 02:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China said the EU’s recent Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism rules amount to unfair and discriminatory treatment of Chinese products and vowed to take all necessary measures in response to any unjust trade restrictions. In a statement issued Thursday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the EU’s planned default values for the carbon intensity of Chinese products are set at significantly high levels and will increase annually over the next three years, despite China’s progress in green and low-carbon development. The ministry said the measures may breach World Trade Organization principles and contradict the United Nations principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities." It also strongly opposed a proposal to expand CBAM from 2028 to around 180 downstream steel- and aluminum-intensive products, describing the move as protectionist.Statement follows (Chinese)....
