Stablecoin use falls to less than 2 percent of US households, study finds

By Neil Roland ( October 6, 2025, 22:04 GMT | Insight) -- Use of stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies for payments declined by about a third from 2022 to 2024, encompassing less than 2 percent of US households in 2024, a US Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City study found. Crypto users were disproportionately unbanked, with the only bit of growth coming from households with poor or very poor credit scores, the study last month by Fumiko Hayashi and Aditi Routh found.  Karen Petrou, a regulatory analyst for Wall Street, Washington and international authorities, said “These jarring facts bring the trillions-of-trillions of dollars stablecoin dreamers back to earth with a hard thump.”Use of stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies for payments declined by about a third from 2022 to 2024, encompassing less than 2 percent of US households in the more recent year, a US Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City study found....
