BOE’s Bailey says IMF, WTO should do more to tackle trade imbalances

( July 15, 2025, 20:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, is set to outline proposals to strengthen the role of the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization to tackle global trade imbalances. Bailey is about to address the financial sector at the annual Mansion House dinner, where he will say there is "a common interest globally in tackling excess imbalances before dangerous levels of trade restrictions come into play." The IMF should strengthen its assessment of the implications of excess imbalances, and help coordinate members around a set of mutually-agreed policies to mitigate risks associated with trade imbalances, he will also say. Bailey's remarks come as the US administration is imposing tariffs on trade partners worldwide.Speech is attached....
