EU states can support press publishers in platform dealings, legal opinion says

( July 10, 2025, 08:48 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU countries can introduce support measures to help press publishers earn fair revenue from platforms as long as these measures respect freedom of contract, according to a non-binding opinion prepared for the EU’s top court. In a dispute between Meta Platforms and Italy’s media regulator referred to the EU Court of Justice, Advocate General Maciej Szpunar has backed rules that require platforms to negotiate and share information with publishers — so long as they don’t force agreements or payments without actual content use. The case concerns the EU Copyright Directive in relation to ensuring fair compensation for online use of press content.
