EU states propose new obligations for phase out of Russian gas in leaked draft

By Eleonora Rinaldi ( September 1, 2025, 12:46 GMT | Insight) -- EU gas importers could face new obligations on how to phase out Russian oil and gas under an Aug. 28 leaked draft from the body representing member states. Under the plan, which amends one from the European Commission,  cargo transporters of liquefied natural gas from different countries should document the share of non-Russian supply in a delivery, which would then be allowed into the EU, the draft says. A new authorization process should also be established to streamline authorities' ability to verify a gas shipment's origin before it is imported. The document will be discussed by EU delegations later this week.EU importers of Russian gas and oil may see new obligations to end existing trade relations, according to the Council of the EU, representing member states....
