A New York magistrate judge said a group of U.S.-based Chinese nationals must compensate Paul Hastings LLP for more than $327,000 in legal fees the firm wracked up combating a case found to be part of a harassment campaign against billionaire exile Ho Wan Kwok's Chapter 11 trustee.

U.S.-based Chinese nationals — whose suit accusing Paul Hastings LLP of not registering as a foreign agent was dismissed earlier this month — called a request from the defendants' legal team at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP for more than $327,000 in attorney fees "grossly excessive" and unreasonable.

A New York federal judge has tossed a suit against Paul Hastings LLP and imposed sanctions against the U.S.-based Chinese nationals who accused the firm of not registering as an agent of the People's Republic of China or the Chinese Communist Party, finding that the case was part of a harassment campaign against the firm.
