A New York federal judge on Friday sentenced a Florida pharmacist to 18 months in prison and ordered him to forfeit $8.1 million for his role in a years-long operation that sold dangerous and unregulated performance-enhancing drugs to the racehorse industry.

More than two dozen trainers, veterinarians, drug distributors and others were hit with criminal charges accusing them of administering performance-enhancing drugs to racehorses competing across the world and hiding the scheme from regulators, with federal prosecutors on Monday calling the bust the largest of its kind.
