A Miami television reporter on Monday told the Manhattan jury hearing insider-trading charges against former U.S. Rep. Stephen Buyer that the ex-Indiana congressman traded stocks for her to help her "catch up" financially after they had a brief affair.

Former Republican Congressman Stephen Buyer has been indicted on allegations that he used insider information to trade on Navigant and Sprint stock ahead of publicly announced mergers, making him one of nine individuals that the federal government charged with insider trading Monday.
