A California federal judge preliminarily approved an $18.2 million class action settlement for a suit that accused two assisted living companies of defrauding current and former residents and their relatives by misleading them about promised care services.

A panel of the Ninth Circuit affirmed class certification for a putative class of assisted living community members alleging fraud, unlawful business practices and elder financial abuse, ruling Wednesday the putative class can prove their claims and that there's "common questions" predominating the lawsuit.
