    A split Ninth Circuit ruled Friday that an Idaho federal court, but not a Montana federal court, abused its discretion in striking down oil and gas leases sold during the Trump administration, but halted "surface-disturbing activity" while the federal government reconsiders the leasing decisions.

    US Backs Reversal In Lease Appeal, But Not For Rule 19

    The federal government said it agrees with two lessees that an Idaho district court's decision to vacate a Wyoming oil and gas lease sale should be reversed, but asked the Ninth Circuit to reject their so-called Rule 19 argument that the ruling should be reversed because it was entered when they weren't parties.

    Chesapeake Tells 9th Circ. Its Oil Leases Were Wrongly Axed

    Chesapeake Exploration told the Ninth Circuit that a district court erred in vacating its existing oil and gas leases, saying the Western Watersheds Project was given substantial opportunity to participate in the Bureau of Land Management's 2018 Wyoming sale process, contrary to its claims.
