Minn. Extends Biz Tax Filing Deadline, But Not Payment Date

Minnesota has extended the filing deadlines for state corporate franchise tax returns and partnership, fiduciary and S corporation income tax returns in response to the novel coronavirus, but the payment deadlines haven't changed, the state Department of Revenue announced Monday.

The department said in a statement that state law grants automatic tax filing extensions for corporate franchise tax returns and partnership, fiduciary and S corporation income tax returns that follow any federal extensions, but added that the state's April 15 due date will remain the same. The federal government has extended both filing and payment deadlines for income tax returns to July 15 from April 15.

However, for individual income tax returns, the Minnesota department has extended the April 15 payment and filing deadlines to July 15, the statement said. The grace period does not include estimated individual income tax payments that are due April 15 for the 2020 tax year, according to the statement.

Many states have pushed back their income tax filing or payment deadlines to offer tax relief amid the spread of COVID-19. As of Monday, the Minnesota Department of Health reported 235 positive COVID-19 cases in the state, with one death attributed to the virus.
