Canada Freezes Alberta Property Taxes Amid COVID-19 Crisis

By Eli Flesch · 2020-03-24 16:05:24 -0400

The Canadian government is freezing property tax rates in Alberta for individuals and deferring property tax payments for businesses in response to the growing novel coronavirus threat in the western province.

A planned 3.4% property tax increase will be canceled, according to a Monday statement, in a move expected to save CA$87 million ($60 million) over the 2020 tax year. Businesses will be able to defer property tax payments for up to six months.

The actions follow previously announced decisions to defer the collection of corporate income taxes and installment payments until Aug. 31. The government estimated that move would provide businesses with an extra CA$1.5 billion in support for the crisis.

The government has also pledged CA$27 billion in direct aid to workers and businesses so they can cope with the economic strain of the coronavirus pandemic.

In Alberta, there were 301 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and 1,646 across Canada as a whole.
