Wis. Tax Dept. Delays Deadlines In Response To Coronavirus

Wisconsin will delay various tax payment and filing deadlines and waive penalties and interest to provide relief and offset the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the state Department of Revenue said in recently released guidance.

In guidance issued Wednesday, the department said it will conform the state income tax deadline to the federal government's new deadline of July 15 rather than April 15 and waive interest and penalties for payments made by then as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The extension also applies to deadlines for contributions to individual retirement accounts and to health savings and medical savings accounts, the department said.

The department added that one-month extensions can be requested for withholding deposit reports and for returns for sales and use tax and excise tax. It said, however, that 1% interest will be charged on payments during the one-month period.
