American Expat Group Advises E-Delivery Of Virus Relief

A group representing Americans living abroad has advised taxpayers living in foreign countries to request electronic transfers for any amount of the novel coronavirus relief rebates they are entitled to, according to a recent memorandum.

The recommendation, made Friday by American Citizens Abroad, was one of several aimed at ensuring taxpayers can receive their recovery rebate without the use of a mailed paper check, which the organization said could engender difficulties.

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a $2 trillion package of relief measures aimed at supporting jobless Americans, boosting business activity and providing resources for health care workers struggling to treat the novel coronavirus.

The group also recommended taxpayers promptly claim a direct deposit of the rebate on a 2019 income tax return, even if they don't usually file a federal tax return because their residency abroad leaves them without taxable income in the U.S.

Taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $69,000 can file returns and request direct deposits electronically using the Internal Revenue Service's Free File program, the group advised.
