Mississippi has suspended certain motor fuel tax licensing and registration requirements for vehicles providing aid in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the state's top tax administrator has announced.

Requirements associated with the International Registration Plan and the International Fuel Tax Agreement will be suspended for 60 days for vehicles carrying medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, supermarket products, food or fuel, according to an order that state Revenue Commissioner Herb Frierson signed March 24. The department posed the order on its website Monday.

The 48 contiguous states of the U.S. and Canada's 10 provinces are parties to the agreement and the plan, which distribute fuel tax and registration revenue among the jurisdictions. The Tuesday expiration date for an apportioned registration issued under the International Registration Plan is extended until April 30, the order said.

The department has also granted various forms of tax relief since the global outbreak of the virus, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19.
