Wis. Gov. Proposes Property Tax Relief In COVID-19 Package

Wisconsin municipalities would be authorized to allow taxpayers to pay their property taxes in three or more installments under a package of proposals introduced by the state's governor in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Under one proposal announced Wednesday by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, Wisconsin municipalities would be able to allow taxpayers three or more installments to pay their 2020 property taxes. The proposal includes a provision waiving interest and penalties on and after April 1 on delinquent property taxes included in the 2019 tax roll and payable in 2020.

Evers also proposed increasing the state's earned income tax credit to 11% of the federal credit from 4%, for filers with one dependent child, and to 14% from 11% for filers with two children. The increase would cost the state $26.7 million, according to a summary of the package. The proposal would also allow counties to issue bonds with maturities up to 10 years to replace funds lost due to coronavirus.

Evers, in a letter to leaders in the state's Senate and Assembly, said that he was hopeful that the Legislature would include his proposals in forthcoming coronavirus relief legislation.
