A Florida federal judge said Thursday that Southern-Owners Insurance Co. must defend a home contractor in a state lawsuit alleging that shoddy workmanship caused property damage, finding that the insurer failed to show that the allegations fall within any of its exclusions.

The Eleventh Circuit vacated a federal judge's decision that Southern-Owners Insurance Co. doesn't have to defend a Florida contractor in an underlying suit over construction defects on a custom home, ruling Thursday that the allegations against the contractor could be construed to fall within the policy coverage.
