Tenn. Extends Excise, Franchise Tax Deadlines For Virus

By James Nani · 2020-03-25 18:45:38 -0400

The Tennessee Department of Revenue has extended the due date for filing and paying franchise and excise tax from April 15 to July 15, the department has said, citing the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Taxpayers will have until July 15 to file returns and make any franchise and excise tax payments, including quarterly estimated payments, that were originally due on April 15, the department said in a notice Tuesday.

Returns filed and payments made on or before the extended due date won't have interest or late-filing payments applied, the department said. The six-month extension due date for 2019, which is Oct. 15, has not been changed, according to the department.

The changes come on the heels of the Internal Revenue Service extending its income tax filing deadline in light of the global outbreak of the virus, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19. The IRS decision authorized the Tennessee revenue commissioner to extend deadlines for filing returns, the department said.
