Maine Extends State Income Tax Payment Deadline Amid Virus

Maine will extend its deadline for state income tax payments from April 15 to July 15 to align with federal deadlines, according to an announcement Thursday that cited the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The payment extension deadline includes any final and estimated state income tax payments that would have been due by April 15, according to the announcement from Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, and Kirsten Figueroa, commissioner of the state Department of Administrative and Financial Services. Penalties for failure to pay and interest will also be abated from April 16 through July 15, the announcement said.

The governor's office said the filing deadlines for Maine income tax returns are automatically tied to federal extensions, and therefore filing deadlines have also been extended to July 15 for 2019 Maine income tax returns. That includes returns for individual income taxes, estates and trusts and corporate income taxes.

The federal government recently extended the income tax filing deadline from April 15 to July 15 as relief from the effects of the coronavirus and public health measures taken in response to the virus, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19.

Sales tax and payroll payments will continue as normal, the announcement said.
