Law360, New York (March 02, 2010, 7:09 PM ET) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday reversed an appeals court ruling that rejected on jurisdictional grounds an $18 million copyright infringement settlement between freelance writers and database publishers.
In an 8-0 decision in Reed Elsevier v. Muchnick, the high court reversed the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit's ruling that Section 411(a) of the Copyright Act contains a jurisdictional requirement precluding the approval of copyright settlements involving material that had never been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.
