High Court Won’t Touch Tribal Lands Jurisdiction Ruling

Law360, New York (January 17, 2012, 4:57 PM ET) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to hear a case over whether federal courts have jurisdiction over contract disputes involving oil and gas leases on American Indian tribal land, letting stand a Ninth Circuit finding against federal jurisdiction.

K2 American Corp., a Montana oil and gas company, was appealing the Ninth Circuit's August decision that its dispute with competitor Roland Oil & Gas LLC, which asserts state contract and tort claims, was outside of federal jurisdiction, partly because neither company was an Indian party....
