Mont. Gets Head Start On Carbon Storage Rules

Law360, New York (May 7, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer on Wednesday signed a bill detailing a statewide system to regulate carbon emissions storage, following a yearlong battle in the Montana Legislature over who would oversee permitting processes and how they would be enforced.

S.B. 489, sponsored by Sen. Keith Bales, R-Otter, lays the groundwork for how Montana will monitor energy companies' use of underground wells to store carbon dioxide emissions in order to remove them from the atmosphere and help mitigate the effects of global warming.
