Yahoo Must Pay $6.6M In Messaging Ad Case: Jury

Law360, New York (May 18, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal jury has ordered Yahoo Inc. to hand over $6.6 million to a subsidiary of Acacia Research Corp. after finding that the Internet giant infringed the company's patent covering background advertising for computer messaging programs.

The verdict, rendered by a jury Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, found that Yahoo's messenger program with IMVironments infringed a patent held by Acacia unit Creative Internet Advertising Corp. both literally and under the doctrine of equivalents.
