Dealing With Competing Claims Following A Union Rift

Law360, New York (June 17, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The UNITE HERE and Workers United split has left employers around the U.S. dealing with both group's claims to be the entity representing their workers. But there are a few actions employers confronted with competing claims can take to successfully navigate the tricky waters, experts say.

Reed Smith LLP labor lawyer and partner David Weissman recommended that employers juggling competing claims to representation take two steps.

First, he suggested, employers should put union dues deducted from employees' paychecks in escrow.
