American Express Faces Patent Suit Over Gift Cards

Law360, New York (June 22, 2009, 12:00 AM ET) -- A prepaid gift card retailer has filed a lawsuit claiming certain gift cards made by American Express Co. and two subsidiaries infringe a patent that covers a method for transacting anonymous Internet purchases.

In a complaint filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, MasterCard gift card retailer PrivaCash Inc. alleges that open loop gift cards made and sold by American Express and its incentive services and travel-related services units infringe its duly issued patent.
