Senate Votes To Permanently Adopt E-Verify

Law360, New York (July 08, 2009, 12:00 AM ET) -- The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to permanently adopt a program for verifying the immigration status of those seeking work in the U.S., setting up a possible fight over the measure.

The Senate passed the amendment, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's appropriations bill, by a margin of 53-44, Reuters News reported.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted previously to extend the program for only two years, so the differences will have to be ironed out before the E-Verify changes become law. The Obama administration...
