Law360, New York (July 14, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A group of major medical device makers carried out a coordinated nationwide sales campaign to entice physicians and hospitals to use their products for off-label purposes, causing increased Medicare costs due to inappropriate inpatient surgical procedures, according to complaints unsealed Monday.

The whistleblower lawsuits detailed an alleged fraudulent marketing scheme related to the companies’ microwave ablation products, which use focused energy to create controlled lesions or scar tissue on a patient’s heart or other organs.
