Plaintiffs Prevail In FDNY Race Bias Suit

Law360, New York (July 22, 2009, 11:49 PM EDT) -- A federal judge on Wednesday ruled in favor of a class of would-be firefighters, finding that written examinations administered by the New York City Fire Department discriminated against black and Hispanic applicants and prevented 1,000 minority candidates from joining the department.

Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis granted the plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgment in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and decided that the FDNY’s employment practices violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
