Obama Renews Myanmar Sanctions, Jade Ban

Law360, New York (July 29, 2009, 5:55 PM EDT) -- President Barack Obama has signed a bill renewing trade sanctions against Myanmar, as well as strengthening a ban on jade and other gemstones, in an effort to pressure the country's military junta to improve its human rights record.

Obama signed the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act on Tuesday, reauthorizing import restrictions against the Southeast Asian nation. The bill was originally enacted in 2003, and the U.S. House of Representatives passed it again on July 21.
