Judge Blocks Sales Of RealNetworks DVD Ripper

Law360, New York (August 12, 2009, 3:16 PM EDT) -- A federal judge has approved a bid by Paramount Pictures Corp., Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and other movie studios for a preliminary injunction on a DVD-ripping application by RealNetworks Inc., which has in turn accused the studios of operating a cartel.

Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled Tuesday that the studios would likely prevail on their claims that RealNetworks' program runs afoul of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
