Patent App Backlog Is ‘Unsustainable’: WIPO Director

Law360, New York (September 18, 2009, 7:40 PM ET) -- The director of the World Intellectual Property Organization has voiced concerns that the global backlog of millions of patent applications continues to grow and efforts need to be pooled at the international level to get the backlog under control.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry said Friday at a symposium for IP authorities that an agency report revealed that the global backlog had reached 4.2 million unprocessed patent applications in 2007 and has grown on average at a rate of 8.7 percent over the past five years....
