EU Extends Antitrust Exemption For Shipping Lines

Law360, New York (September 28, 2009, 5:02 PM EDT) -- The European Commission will extend its block antitrust exemption that lets shipping lines create shared cargo transporting service until 2015, but plans to lower the maximum market share cutoff for a group of companies to qualify for the automatic protection, the regulator said Monday.

The new regulation — which will kick in after the current liner shipping consortia block exemption expires in April 2010 — also has a broader scope, covering all liner shipping cargo services instead of only container transport.
