Amerigroup Shunned High-Risk Patients: Jury

Law360, New York (October 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Health insurance company Amerigroup Corp. was held liable for a total of $144 million in damages on Monday when a federal jury found that it had discriminated against pregnant women and other high-risk patients.

The jury found that Amerigroup Corp. and its subsidiary Amerigroup Illinois had profited unfairly off of Medicaid dollars by only signing on healthy clients and avoiding ones with more health problems.

The jury awarded the government $48 million, which was tripled to $144 million under the federal False Claims Act.
