France, Italy, Germany Fight EU Van Emissions Limits

Law360, New York (October 13, 2009, 2:16 PM EDT) -- France, Italy and Germany — home to Europe's major automobile manufacturers — are reportedly trying to halt the European Union’s ambitious emissions standards for new cargo vans, claiming the reductions can’t be achieved until the economy improves.

The three countries have asked the European Commission to suspend or soften existing plans to rein in carbon dioxide emissions for new vans by 14 percent, to 175 grams per kilometer by July 2013, and to 135 grams per kilometer by 2020, Reuters reported Tuesday.
