Russia Backs Off Bid To Join WTO As Customs Union

Law360, New York (October 16, 2009, 4:53 PM EDT) -- Russia has reportedly backed away from joining the World Trade Organization as a customs union, but still plans to work closely with two former Soviet republics in its continuing negotiations for WTO membership.

Four months after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin threw a wrench into Russia's WTO negotiations by announcing that it would seek to join as a single customs union with the republics of Kazakhstan and Belarus, Russia is going back on that bid, Reuters reported Thursday.
