E.U. Keeps Watch As Rome Gets Behind Highway Deal

Law360, New York (November 8, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Hailing Italy for its decision to remove barriers to a merger between Italian highway operator Autostrade and Spanish infrastructure company Abertis Infraestructuras SA, E.U. regulators said Wednesday they would closely watch Italy for any move to thwart the deal.

In a meeting held late Tuesday, Italian Infrastructure Minister Antonio Di Pietro told E.U. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes that Italy would clear the Spanish company’s takeover of the Italian company. However, he maintained that the E.C. still must examine Autostrade’s permission to collect tolls.
