Cinemark Seeks To Lower Curtain On Imax Patents

Law360, New York (November 4, 2009, 4:06 PM EST) -- Two movie theater heavyweights have gone to battle over large-screen theaters, with Cinemark USA Inc. seeking a declaration that two patents held by Imax Corp. are invalid, arguing that Imax has “placed a cloud” over Cinemark's business.

Cinemark fired off the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on Tuesday after Imax, which itself specializes in large-screen theaters, expressed concern that Cinemark's new big-screen, digital-format theater — called XD 3 — infringes the two Imax patents.
