Mattel Wins Copyright Protection For Barbie's Facial Features

Law360, New York (April 21, 2004, 12:00 AM ET) -- Toymaker Mattel Inc. is entitled to copyright protection for the facial features of the Barbie doll, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has determined in a ruling that overturned a lower court’s decision.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a court ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that the noses, lips and eyes of youthful female dolls are so common they can't be protected by copyrights.
