Food Safety Bill Clears Senate Committee

Law360, New York (November 18, 2009, 12:53 PM ET) -- The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions voted unanimously on Wednesday to report a bill giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration broad new powers to regulate food safety issues throughout domestic and import supply chains.

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, sponsored by Sens. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Judd Gregg, R-N.H., will likely undergo a few tweaks before going up for a vote in the Senate, lawmakers said, possibly including provisions to clarify jurisdictional boundaries, institute new country-of-origin labeling requirements...
