San Francisco Trade Group Sues Over Health Care Law

Law360, New York (November 14, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- In an effort to stop a new ordinance that would force restaurant employee health care costs onto employers, a culinary trade group has sued the city of San Francisco, saying federal law prohibits local governments from dictating employee benefits.

The Golden Gate Restaurant Association urged the court to strike down a part of the law, which is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2007. The challenged provision requires a business with 20 or more employees to pay for its workers’ health care.
