Calif. Agency OKs Energy Efficiency Rules For TVs

Law360, New York (November 18, 2009, 4:53 PM ET) -- The California Energy Commission said Wednesday that it had approved new regulations to implement the nation's first energy efficiency standards for televisions.

The commission approved the standards — which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2011 — in a 5-0 vote Wednesday.

The technology neutral standards mandate that all new televisions sold in California consume 33 percent less electricity by 2011, and 49 percent less electricity by 2013.

The standards will apply only to televisions with a screen size of 58 inches or smaller.
