Former Safeway Buyer To Cop To Tomato Bribe Scam

Law360, New York (January 6, 2010, 4:33 PM EST) -- A former purchasing manager at supermarket chain Safeway Inc. is the latest person to agree to plead guilty to participating in a four-year conspiracy to bribe major food producers and fix prices in the processed tomato industry, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Michael Chavez, who served as group manager of strategic sourcing at Safeway from 2000 to 2007, will plead guilty to two counts of wire fraud, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner of the Eastern District of California.
