Japan Extends Clunker Subsidy Program To US Cars

Law360, New York (January 20, 2010, 12:42 PM EST) -- The government of Japan has announced that it will extend a program that gives subsidies to people who trade old cars in for more fuel-efficient ones to include U.S.-made cars, two weeks after the authors of America's similar Cash for Clunkers program criticized Japan's program as “discriminatory.”

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Tuesday that, going forward, the program wouldn't discriminate between foreign and domestic cars and that 43 percent of imported cars currently qualify for subsidies.
